RVA Beard League October Updates

posted Oct 16, 2012, 6:41 AM by Chad Roberts   [ updated Oct 16, 2012, 6:41 AM ]
Hey there RVA Beard League members!

Instead of relying solely on Facebook and the occasional tweet and hoping you catch one of them, we're starting up a good old fashioned email list.

We'll send out an email a couple times a month, usually around the first, and again near the middle. It'll mostly cover stuff going on around town, reminders about meetings, League events, supporting one another's activities, and what not.

If you're involved with a project or putting on an activity around town and would like us to get out the word, just email us at updates@beardleague.org with the details. We're here to support Richmond and any and everyone who rocks or reveres facial hair.

What Went Down
BeardCon
The weekend of October 6th, Travis Oliver, Shannon Butler, Stephen & Ashley Brown, Robere Del Follicle, Kevin Orlosky and Chad Roberts hit the road with the support of PBR to Columbus, Ohio for BeardCon. The event benefited the Central Ohio Men Against Prostate Cancer. Beard Team Ohio rented out a 2-story ballroom of the Columbus Convention Center and in addition to the competition, had 17 beard clubs (of 28 represented) selling merch, a kids fake beard contest, beard carnival games, vendors galore, and a few discussion panels. The first panel was on the "History, Benefits, and Social Significance of Facial Hair", Chad was a panel member on "Starting A Beard Club", and Travis sat on the "Beard Clubs: Merchandising, Marketing, and Sponsorships" panel. As the best performing team of the night, the Bellefontaine (Ohio) Body Bearders took home the coveted BeardCon 2012 Cup. Fear not, for our very own Ashley Brown took home 2nd Place in Most Fantastic Fake Beard with her Clothesline Laundry beard, and Chad took 3rd in Full Beard Styled! As as the most prolific photographer in the competitive bearding world, Stephen took a few (hundred) photos of the event. Check them out, if you haven't already.

Richmond Folk Festival
This past Friday night and Saturday afternoon, a group of us volunteered at the Richmond Folk Festival as Safety Escorts. Since we apparently gravitate toward volunteering gigs that require us to wear neon mesh safety vests, our job was to make sure that the trucks and vans carrying the performers and their equipment didn't hit any of the concert goers as the vehicles drove through the pedestrian-filled roads between sets. There was the occasional mom on the cellphone pushing a stroller and tipsy dude who wouldn't listen causing a few near misses, but there were no injuries or trips to the hospital for anyone on our watch! Mission accomplished. Given the sheer volume of awesome beards and moustaches we saw at the festival, we're giving serious thought to setting up a (very expensive, but possibly completely worth-while) booth at the Festival next year.
